Acquired at the trade deadline to bolster the Giants’ rotation, Leake made only one start Aug. 2 before landing on the disabled list.

Ryan Vogelsong will start Tuesday’s game at St. Louis.

Leake said he can pitch and swing the bat, but running is a concern, and he can only get it up to about 60 percent.

“Each day it gets better,” he said. “It’s just not ready. You can only go as fast as your body lets you.”

The plan, according to CSN Bay Area, is to have Leake back in the rotation this weekend in Pittsburgh, although he said he couldn’t project a firm return date yet.

The Giants (64-54) are in a crucial stretch in their schedule, facing playoff contenders — the Cardinals, Cubs, Pirates and Dodgers — in their next four series through Sept. 2.

They enter Tuesday’s play three games back of the first-place Dodgers in the NL West and four games back of the Cubs for the second wild-card spot and six games back of the wild-card leading Pirates.
